Adrift

This single word describes my current state quite accurately.  In the beginning of April, an unpredictable event knocked the ground out from under my feet.  Due to unfortunate external circumstances, the place I loved working at had to drastically downsize its staff in order to stay afloat.  As my daughter likes to sing “like a small boat on the ocean”, I have been drifting ever since.

Many people have tried to make me feel better by saying things like “now you will have more time for your art”.  In theory, it makes sense;  in practice, it’s a whole different story…  It turns out that looking for new opportunities is far more time consuming than a full time job.  I am barely making enough time to take advantage of this “break” to go to the gym more often.

Rather than wallowing in self pity, I have been grabbing the bull by the horns since day one.

Every single day, I have been actively networking left and right in order to find a new place where my expertise and skill set would be valuable.  Furthermore, I want to make lemonade by using this event as an opportunity to jump up the career development ladder.

Unfortunately, over the last month and a half I only had a couple hours that I could devote to my artwork.  I would love to use it as art therapy, but I am afraid of losing my job search momentum.  So many people have warned me about how “looking for a job is a full time job”.  Meanwhile, I have a self inflicted deadline for 1-2 new art pieces in the end of July.

Here is a sneak peek at what I am making next.  I will write about it in more detail in a later post. It is actually meant for a very exciting event that I will write about soon.

  1. I’m sorry to hear about your job loss Yana. I was in a similar situation for like 2 years and it’s quite an uneasy feeling having to wake up everyday with a fear about the future. All I want from you is not to give up.
